Water has played an important role in my life. I grew up a swimmer and half of my time and energy in high school revolved around water polo. Being in the water and around the water is healing and its hard to picture a life where I was not somehow in connection with a body of water; whether it be a pool, a lake, a river, or the great big ocean. In June, I got to experience an amazing massage modality that has added to my appreciation and awe of the element. I took an "Aquatic Integration" course where we learned the basic techniques to work with a client in the water. As an observer, it was the most beautiful body work I had ever witnessed. The qualities of the water helped transition the receiver to a relaxed and receptive state of care while the practitioner worked attentively and smoothly to give care. I hope to experience more of the aquatic integration practice in my future. The water's healing qualities combined with an attentive and intuitive practitioner makes great therapy. Today I participated in another event that added to my state of wonder with the water. I worked as a water helper volunteer with Ampsurf. Vets that have experienced physical or mental traumas during their service got the opportunity to try surfing in the waves of Pismo. When I first looked out at the waves; curling and crashing, one after the other, at a rate that I, as a new surfer, would be nervous to attempt, wondered how the disabled participants were going to handle the experience. The well trained surf instructors motivated the participants who faced the challenge with courage and joy. The water is powerful, but the fear of the water poses more of a threat. I watched the participants get placed on their boards in a manor that allowed them comfort if they could not stand and I watched the thrill in the eyes of the participants as they rode wave after wave. It was great to help out and be apart of another great water adventure.
